Although we have a strict no-breeding policy at FRED, we were delighted when Sophie delivered our very first foal here at Farmersfield. We had no idea when Sophie would give birth – a donkey’s gestation period can range from 8-13 months – so it was a huge surprise when we discovered Sophie had delivered a perfectly formed, newly born baby donkey on Saturday 9th March (2019) all by herself. For the first day Sophie was very protective of her newborn, but from day two Sophie has allowed us to handle, cuddle and groom Patrick who, in turn, has enjoyed all the attention he receives.
For the best part of a week we could not settle on a name for this bundle of joy then it became obvious to all here at FRED it had to be “Patrick” – in memory of our beloved, aged, Patrick who passed away only months before.
As befits a young foal, Patrick is full of energy, fun and cheekiness. He has now joined some of the older donkeys in the field and learning to become a fine upstanding member of our donkey community.
